Thank you, Judith. I have been a user of technology for a long time. I am awaiting more info on AI, especially since the CEOs voiced their concerns last week. Right now I approach my posts as a craft, and use only the grammar and spell checks functions in MS Word.
There has been lots of follow up on the AI alarm that was raised. I am following up on the hype vs reality debate. Al has many valuable uses as do automobiles. both industries need to be regulated.
Thanks for getting the conversation going. The news today has been focused on the AI threat hype. It's the hype that is the red herring. The mid terms are less than 50 days away. Why was the whistle on AI not blown six months ago? Greed is the #1 issue and driving the race to get ahead of competitors. Biden signed the Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence and it is no surprise that Trump rescinded it on January 20, 2025. Always follow the money.
I am re-stacking articles on why regulating AI is so important. It's not going away. As individuals we can be prudent on how we use it. Some jobs will go away and some jobs will be created. We are not old fogies but we did not work the way the younger people work today. I can't even explain what my adult offspring do and how they can work from home.
For now, nothing should distract us from the mid-terms. There is too much at stake.
I appreciate your level-headed, common sense perspective on AI. So far, I've pretty much ignored it and all the hype. I have not changed how I write one bit. I don't use it. Don't see myself using it. If that makes me an old fogey, so be it. What I do worry about is all the people who will have their jobs impacted. Many will lose jobs. That is no small outcome. I also think there is an awful lot of greed driven harm that will likely happen besides job losses. AI will be used as an excuse/reason for hurting people. That's the worrisome part for me.
Like most things, there is good that will come from using AI and there will be harm. It's definitely going to be a hot issue to keep an eye on. Thanks for writing about it. And yes, we all need those breaks, that's for sure.
