Solstice is Near
Baltimore’s Miracle on 34th Street, Light Street Christmas Village,
Baltimore Harbor boat parades, and tugboat ballet bring joy to Baltimore.
Menorahs burn at Senior Housing communities.
The Advent Wreath’s pink candle is lit. One more Sunday before Christmas. No matter what belief system or religion you follow, days are getting longer and lights, candles and bonfires burn through the night to coax the sun back.
Pagans celebrated the Winter Solstice to honor the rebirth of the sun and the turning of the year, marking the end of darkness and the start of longer days, symbolizing new beginnings, hope, and reflection on cycles of life, death, and rebirth through traditions like lighting fires, decorating with evergreens, feasting, and setting intentions for the coming year.
Naturally, as pagans converted to Christianity in the centuries following Christ, they brought their traditions with them.
There’s a rich tradition behind Christmas trees, and a few lessons to be learned—about multiculturalism, about respect for other religions and for nature, and about the human bond that links all people, Christian and non-Christian.
Enjoy your holidays!
